Abort! - Magazine
Publication & Wordmark Design | Fall 2023
Objective |The goal was to create and design a cohesive magazine consisting of 2 articles, a table of contents, a cover, and a wordmark identity.
Abort! is a social justice magazine that informs people about women's reproductive rights in America. The word "abort" was used to create a sense of urgency as the climate of these issues is rapidly changing, and people need to stay informed about their rights.
Creating the Identity
Abort! is not just a social justice magazine, it's a powerful tool that aims to inform and evoke emotions. It delves into controversial topics, aiming to spark a sense of connection and involvement in its audience.

The tones would be critical and harsh, so the name had to resemble this. I created a list of words I associate with and do not associate with the magazine.
Ideation & Iteration
Once the magazine's concept was finalized, it was time to find some basic typefaces that fit the tone. I wanted a lot of contrast and sharp lines within the letterforms.
Process
After exploring names, the choice 'abort' was settled upon. It showcased a sense of urgency with the magazine's topics and contents but also sparked intrigue and inspiration. The typeface was then experimented with to further align with the magazine's vision.

Creating a System
High Contrast & High Texture
When conceptualizing the magazine, I wanted to create a very bold image style, so I decided that using paint could give me the effect and lifelike texture I wanted. Limiting the color palette to only black and white created maximum contrast and allowed the textures to speak loudly.

Spreads Process
The spread process involved a lot of ideation and iteration. The most significant part was deciding on the typographic layouts. I wanted the headers to break and fall while the body text flowed from page to page.

Cover
I wanted the cover to be cohesive with the rest of the magazine and to feel like it was painted with passion using the same messy brush strokes from the spreads.
